A close up look at a Corkscrew Anemone

I took this photo in June 2010. I used a Nikon D200 camera in Sea and Sea housing with a macro lens. I found this corkscrew anemone at the end of a dive I did at Turtle Reef, tucked in a hole in the hard pan of the shallows. I really like these creatures alot!! I have actually put this photo in my Underwater Gallery on my website (#14) if you care to have a look. It was also published in the Cayman Compass's Weekender in a write up I did on underwater photography and shooting with natural light.

Recently I was asked to do the staff photos for the people at Real Life. They wanted both group and individual photos, and in a setting which fits in with the Caribbean themed magazine. There's not a more perfect place than the good old West Bay Beach/Dock. The group wore light blues and I think this was very effective in achieving that Caribbean feel, yet maintaining the professionalism and class that the magazine upholds. It was a fun group and we got some great shots!

Wim and Dave you may recognize from a post I uploaded a few weeks back, Wim & Dave Engaged!! Wim is from the States and Dave is from the UK, they met in the Virgin Islands where Dave was working as a dive instructor, and Wim as a nurse. They came to the Cayman Islands together and, well, the rest is history! Here are the photos from the big day...

Since Wim is such a good friend of mine I was behind the scenes and involved in all the pre wedding festivities, here are a few pix from the Hen Night and the pre-wedding chilling by the pool drinking champers...

The wedding was held at the South Sound Beach next to the Community Center, it is also known as the local surf spot. It is certainly one of the best beaches on the island with its rugged coral, rocks and surf. The couple were surrounded by their friends and the ceremony was given by Francine Jackson from Cayman Weddings.

We headed to Smiths Cove, the location where Dave proposed, for some quick photos before heading to the reception on the Jolly Roger.

Romance Everywhere with Rose & Christian

Rose and Christian got married last May with a stunning wedding put together by Meg at Octopus Events. They had about 60 guests that came down with them and had a lovely Rehearsal Dinner the night before at Aqua. The next day their ceremony was on the beach at Caribbean Club with the reception at Luca afterwards.
Rose and Christian are a absolutely lovely couple. I did their engagement photos last January and was thrilled they asked me to do their wedding as well. Rose and Christian are both doctors and residing in Michigan. Christian is originally from Germany, and Rose is of Philipino descent and this made for a very unique wedding, using traditions from both cultures.

I really dropped the ball on blogging this one in a timely fashion! It was such a beautiful wedding and I had so many good photos it was intimidating trying to tackle it. But then I just decided to put up the photos/layout that I put in their album, like I did with the wedding album I posted a few weeks back with Tyra and Steven. Better late than never!! This wedding will be featured in the Jet Fete wedding blog very soon and I will be sure to post a link.

Stephen and Tyra got married at the Villas of the Galleon with a intimate ceremony organized by Rebecca from Parfait Wedding and Events. It was a rainy all day but luckily the rain cleared for the 30 minute ceremony just in time. The next day Steven and Tyra requested more photos and a Trash the Dress session. We had so much fun going from location to location and finally the big plunge into the Caribbean in full wedding attire. Both days are documented below in the layout of the album the couple ordered. When printed it is 13x11 hard cover album with a dust jacket and printed on beautiful pearl paper.

Wim and Dave are a local couple and got engaged at Smiths Cove a few months ago. Wim is one of my very best friends on this island so I was thrilled when she asked me to do their engagement photos.

Connor and Danielle, and their lovely pooches Cassie and Luna, chose Camana Bay for their Christmas pictures this year. Camana Bay is so festive with their giant Christmas tree, huge wrapped presents and ornaments scattered through out the area, it really is a perfect place for photos.

It is always challenging to photograph animals, and amazing to get great shots, there are always distractions and smells that send the dogs into a furry of excitement! Especially for Luna, she is still a puppy.

Camana Bay is a nice mix of holiday decor yet the palm trees and docks remind us that we are indeed on a tropical island in the Caribbean! Lucky us!

In the end the pooches will do as they please, as you can see Cassie took advantage of the water and jumped right in, Christmas bow and all!

The Yonkers family are Iowa natives but recently relocated down here to Grand Cayman. For their Christmas card this year they wanted palm trees and beach, a tropical contrast to the Iowa winters! I just love this area of beach, it is stunning with the casurina trees and needles filling the background... tropical yet Christmassy!

I just love this stretch of 7-Mile Beach between the London House and the Renaissance. Great palm trees, hammocks and perfect sand, can't beat it!

11-11-11 What a date!

Brian and Nicole wed at The Reef Resort on Grand Cayman's East End. They are such a lovely couple and looked like they were having such a blast on their special day.

The couple before the ceremony, they both were in amazing spirits and were glowing with happiness and anticipation.

Nicole's father walked her down the isle and gave her away to Brian.

The couple performed a sand ceremony. This ceremony is performed when each person has a vase with different color sand and they layer the colors into one larger vase representing the couple's two lives coming together.

Nicole and Brian were surrounded by supportive family and friends.

The Reef Resort's dock is absolutely one of the best places to take photos, especially on an evening like this one!

What a beautiful wedding day and a gorgeous couple, best of luck in your life together Mr. and Mrs. Bowles!!

James and Christine Bussey were expecting their first child any day when this shoot too place. The baby to be, a little boy to be named James Jr.

The couple wanted some nice beachy shots and then some arty studio shots. We did the beach shots first just in time for a perfect sunset at Spotts Public Beach.

After the sun went down we went to the Bussey's house and I set up a little studio and did some studio shots right there in their living room.

Since this shoot baby James has been born, new born pix to come!

Dave and Judy got married at the Southern Cross Club in Little Cayman.

They left their kids behind in Canada and had a romantic ceremony with just the two of them under the palm trees.

The staff at the Southern Cross Club made the day special with the decorations and flowers, the ceremony went off without a hitch!

Despite the wind, Dave and Judy got a beautiful Cayman day to tie the knot.

Anna and John Cowan used to live down here in Cayman. Originally from Canada, John's work has now taken them up to North Carolina in the states. This is their first time back since they moved and they wanted to take some family portraits capturing their old stompin ground.

Despite the wavy sea and scattered clouds, it was a nice day with no rain, and the breeze was there to cool us off.

Bruce and Tina Smit came down to Cayman from Iowa to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Being that they haven't taken professional photos since their wedding, they wanted to document this happy occasion with some anniversary portraits. They chose to have the photos taken at their accommodation, The Reef Resort over on the East End.

The Reef has so many beautiful places for photos. We walked down the beach to the private end of the beach where we stumbled upon a beach weed that has grown into a perfectly shaped heart. What a lovely treat that was.

The couple chose to bring their wedding colors into the photos, Bruce wore a tie and Tina had a beautiful piece of fabric.

Congratulation Tina and Bruce, it was lovely to meet you and I hope you have another 25 wonderful years together!

This is the beach in South Sound, just past Caribbean Paradise. There has been so much rain, wind and waves lately, and with that... garbage. So sad to see this small stretch of beach so polluted.

What is even more heartbreaking is that this problem is so much worse world wide. This is not someone else's problem, it is ours, and even more so the next generation's! Lets all do our part, cut down on purchasing/using plastics!!

KD & JR: Last Minute Portraits on the Beach

JR & KD are a couple down visiting Grand Cayman from Arkansas. They had a lovely week here on the island despite the rainy weather. They did unfortunately forget their camera charger so hey had no camera to document their stay. On their last day the called me for a quick portrait session to get some nice photos of them on our beautiful 7-Mile Beach.

Boggy Sand Road - Classed Up and Character Lost

As you might have seen a few days ago I uploaded an engagement shoot I recently did with Ailbhe and Barry at Boggy Sand Rd. I noticed while shooting at the old house, that something was different, something didn't seem quite right. I then noticed that this old building that I love to shoot had been painted and the rusty tin roof had been replaced! I looked back in my photos and compared it to another engagement shoot I did back in April of this year with Tracey and Tyler. There is definitely something to be said for modernizing, upkeep and improving, but I have to say the charm of this building was definitely in the rusty tin roof and peeling paint. Sad to see that bit of character lost, the palm tree even looks sad!

Munchin our way through München... well all of Germany for that matter!

June 1 & 2, 2011 - München, Germany. Great food, sites and great to see the family!

Munich is a lovely town and after meeting my family there we had a great first night with some shots of tequilla, followed by many more! Even Subbie (mom) joined in the fun!

The next day, after a slow start, we had a lovely bike ride through the English Gardens hopping from beer garden to beer garden, drinking beer, eating sausages, pretzels, and drinking coffee, a fun first day in Munich.

Below is a cute little cafe we popped into to warm up from the chilly day.

And now time for the famous Hofbräuhaus for more pretzels and beer! It was father's Day and was absolutely packed with drunk Germans drinking, eating and singing. We definitely joined in the festivities!

Once we left Munich we stopped in this beautiful and quaint mountain town, Oberammergau. At first glance it was a lovely place to be, but upon further inspection all the stores were filled with wood carved nativity scenes. The whole town was a little bit cultish for my liking and I was pretty happy to move on our merry way. The best part besides the view was of course the food!!

The European iced coffee is no joke, it comes with ice cream, whipped cream and of course coffee, and usually a cookie of some sort on top. Pure heaven!!

This photo is actually in Switzerland. We stopped on our way from Italy back to Germany, of course we stopped to eat, and of course enjoy the stunning view of the Swiss Alps!

Venice, Italy: Waterways and Wine

June 3-5, 2011 - Oh Venice, Italy I am in love with you! We had 3 glorious, and ahem very expensive days in this fabled city.

This is a typical canal, with the old colorful and chipped buildings overflowing with flowers and little boats cruising below the bridges. Charming and romantic.

This is the view from the rooftop of our, Hotel la Commedia. Covered in flowers with a stunning view of orange tiles roofs and clock tower in San Marco Square. Of course we had to enjoy a few glasses of wine up there before heading out to a magnificent dining experience.

Once of the biggest and most famous places in Venice, Piazza San Marco. It is filled with the big cathedral, clock tower and beautiful old buildings. Not to mention all the tourists, vendors and musicians.

One of the coolest things about the streets of Venice is that you never know what you are going to see or where you are going to wander.

It wouldn't be a true Venice experience without a gondola ride through the canals.

A little prosecco to make the experience that much more enjoyable!

After our prosecco filled gondola ride we popped into a Moreno Glass boutique and all bought a few souvenirs... appropriately a blown glass cork screw.

Our stay would not be complete without a night out with Linds. Oh and what a night it was!!

Venice you are a magical place with your streets and wine and ancient appeal. Thank you for such an unforgettable experience!

Italy: Verona & Bellagio

The next few blogs are going to be on a personal note. I have been waiting for the time to catch up on all my work and have some down time to blog my Europe trip last June. I already blogged the German Wedding, the whole reason for our trip, but now I am finally getting to the travel before the wedding. My mom, dad and sister all piled into a tiny car and cruised from Munich to Italy and back up to Heidelberg. Oh what fun...

June 2-7, 2011 - First stop in the eat and drinking indulgance... Verona, Italy.

We arrived in Verona by car in the early evening and after checking into our hotel we promptly went out to eat. We went to an out of the way restaurant in this tiny little square. Needless to say we drank a few amazing bottles of wine & consumed some amazing food. Our first Italian dining experience, wow.

After dinner we were quite full so we took a walk and stumbled onto this bustling square. What did we do, sat and ate some gelato and ordered a bottle of prosecco!

After great food and some fun people watching, we closed down the square and found ourselves wanting more. We stumbled upon this little food stand, where we promptly ordered more food and wine, and got a bit silly!

Finally at about 2am we all decided to call it an evening. What a fun first night in Italy with mom, dad and sis!

The next day my mom & dad decided to go into the old Arena seen in the background. Linds & I decided to do what we intended on doing for the next 10 days, eat and drink. We ordered pizza and iced coffee with amaretto. I was literally so happy at the moment I took these photos I had a few tears of sheer happiness in my eyes.

The hotel we stayed at, Hotel Giulietta e Romeo. It was tucked away on a quiet lovely side street, like most of the little narrow streets of Verona.

These last few photos are from a town on Lake Como called Bellagio. It is a stunning quaint town right on the water. We had some amazing food, did a bit of shopping, and enjoyed the stunning scenery in our short stop before taking the ferry across the lake and getting back on the road to Germany. The only complaint I had about this little town was that there were boat loads of really snobby American tourists that walked around like they owned the town... too bad people like that give Americans such a bad name.

Ailbhe & Barry: From Ireland to Engaged

Ailbhe and Barry got engaged and had their portraits taken at one of my favorite places for photos, the West Bay Public Beach/Dock, and Boggy Sand Rd. The local couple, originally from Ireland, have been on the island for a year now.

Boggy Sand Rd is always a fun place for photos with the old buildings and the rugged overgrown road.

The Irish couple will get married next September 29, 2012 back in their home town of Dublin.

Unfortunately, the odds are strongly against this little one, but we gave her a good luck send off. She will now float away at sea, eating and growing up to become an adult. If she survives, in 20 years she will return to this stretch of 7-Mile Beach to lay eggs of her own.

It is condo time! During the low tourist season many of the condos do remodeling, upgrading and just want a fresh look for their website. I have been very busy with various projects along the beach.

This condo is at the Beachcomber. The Beachcomber has very new and upscale condos and wow what a view of 7-Mile! This condo is #34 and had 3 bedrooms. The units are very spacious and all of them have direct views of the beautiful blue Caribbean.

Carmen and Nick had a beautiful sunset ceremony at the Westin along 7-Mile Beach.

Carmen was walked down the sandy isle by her brother.

The couple was accompanied by friends and family not only for the ceremony, but for fun in the Cayman sun in the days after.

Despite the rain earlier in the day, the sun managed to come out just in time for the ceremony and portraits and made for some stunning photographs.

Attached to Carmen's flowers was a small photograph of her mother, who was with Carmen and Nick on their special day.

Congrats Nick and Carmen, it was great to meet you! I wish you two much happiness in your life together.

My sister got engaged to her fiance Cody and they asked me to do their engagement photos. We did a few different locations including Silver Sands beach, the West Bay Dock/Beach location and this cute little park deep in West Bay. We got some great photos!

The Stricker family came down here to Cayman to take some lovely sunset portraits on 7-Mile Beach.

I love this little sea grape grove on this stretch of public beach just past the Avalon condos.

Despite a tired bunch from a full day of fun at Rum Point, we still managed to get some nice smiles out of everyone!
